Character Development- Flora Sandes

Once we desided on this style of charcter i started developing how the uniforms would look. 

I then went on to experiment with different colours using water colour but felt water colour didnt do justice to the charcter. 

We desided as a group that the charcters uniform should be created from  photographs of the actual serbian uniform from ww1. 

I experimented with diferent cutouts from black and white photographs to save money on the printouts. 

Once i had desided on what photos to use for each part i created the charcter in colour. 

The main dificulty with creating the charcter this way was finding the weite photographs to use as theirs isnt many coloured photos of the serbian uniform from ww1 online but i overcame this problem by using different parts of the uniform to create some of the shapes

I first started by making a more realistic charcter.

Then tryed to simplify the charcter o make it easyer to reproduce.

After desiding we would use a cutout style of animation i looked at southpark charcters and experimented with different ideas from that.

While meeting with the other charcter designer for this brief (Toria) she had a great design for the charcters which would be easy to make and animate with, the charcter design she had been working on are similar to the image below.

washing line

This is the work I did on the project before I combined it with James animation of the woman putting the washing up.

Washing Line animation Cycle

This Animation is of a washing line blowing in the wind, for this task i did a quick 1 second cycle of the cloths blowing then copied and pasted the cycle to make the animation longer, this is a good process to use when you have something that doesn't move much in a scene.
When scanning this animation into istopmotion the lighting changed for one of the frames causing it to be brighter for 1 frame each time it cycles.

Bouncing Ball 6

For this animation i drew a football bouncing with a pan shot, i drew a strait line with a simple tree moving along the page to show the ball is moving. in this animation the ball changes size quite a lot which wasn't meant to happen so if i was to do it again i would make sure the size of the ball is constant across the whole animation.

For this animation i drew a pingpong ball bouncing across the page as i wanted to look at the difference between a light ball and a heavier ball like the first bouncing ball animation i posted.

This Animation is of a light ball like a pingpong ball bouncing with a pan shot.
i used a cloud as the background but regret this as it just looks like the cloud is moving through the sky.

This is my animation of a heavy ball like a bowling ball bouncing in a pan shot.
I used a simple background to show that the ball is still moving even though it stays in the middle of the screen after its first bounce.

The female soldier

Flora Sandes was the only english woman to serve as a soldier in the world war 1. 

This is my 12 frame story board showing Flora's switching between the life as a front line nurse to a front line soldier. 

1) on her way to Serbia

2) collecting uniform

3) helping wounded soldier in trenches- in the dark because the trenches block out most of the light

4) other soldiers shout retreat and start fleeing trenches

5) she is running for her life with her unit

6) Flora has been separated from her unit-dark and gloomy atmospher helps show she is scared and alone

7) she comes across serbian soldiers-shot from over Floras shoulder 

8) after sticking with the soldiers she becomes one of them

9) close up on face while in a gun fight- shows she is ditermind 

10) Gunfight-Wide shot to show how big the battle is

11) Flora jumping from explosion- shot from the front to show facial expresion and explosion

12) waking up in hospital bed, tells the viewer she has survived
